Ricardo Scofidio, a key figure in contemporary architecture and co-founder of the firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, died on Thursday at the age of 89. The news was confirmed by his sons, Gino and Ian, to The New York Times.

A Legacy of Innovative Designs

Known for his visionary work, Scofidio’s notable projects include:

  • The expansion and renovation of the Museum of Modern Art.
  • The Tianjin music and education center at the Juilliard School.
  • The redesign of the Lincoln Center campus.
  • Environmental projects like the Broad museum in Los Angeles and Zaryadye Park in Moscow.

Throughout his career, he collaborated closely with his wife, Elizabeth Diller, enhancing the firm’s creative output.

Contributions to Architecture

Diller Scofidio + Renfro, founded in the East Village in 1979, has become renowned for its innovative approach. Under their leadership, the firm grew to over 100 employees and was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 1999.

In a statement, the firm expressed, “Ric had a profound impact on our architectural practice, establishing the studio with a mission to make space on his own terms.” His influence will continue through the ongoing work of the firm’s partners and principals.

Personal Life and Early Career

Scofidio was born in New York City to Earle and June Scofidio and had four children with his first wife, Allana Jeanne De Serio, before their divorce in 1979. He met Diller while teaching at the Cooper Union School of Architecture, and they married in 1989.

Commemoration

The firm has announced that a memorial service will be organized in the upcoming weeks to honor Scofidio’s legacy and contributions to architecture.
