Alamo Colleges Acquires Office Complex for New Tech School

In a significant development for the Alamo Colleges District, the organization has successfully acquired a 14.5-acre office complex and parking garage in the Westover Hills area of San Antonio for under $38 million. The property, which was previously used as a Kohl’s call center, will soon be transformed into the new “School of Emerging Technologies,” a cutting-edge educational facility that will be led by Northwest Vista College, the district’s largest institution with approximately 22,000 students.

The 210,000-square-foot facility is set to house various programs focused on critical areas of technology such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, and information technology. It will also introduce a new Bachelor of Applied Technology degree, which reflects the growing demand for skilled workers in the rapidly evolving tech industry. The acquisition is part of the district’s broader initiative to address workforce development needs and provide students with the specialized education that is increasingly required in today’s technology-driven job market.

Strategically located in the heart of San Antonio’s Westover Hills area, the complex is situated near major employers, including Frost Bank’s data center, making it an ideal location for students looking to enter the tech industry. The proximity to these major employers will enhance career access for students and offer opportunities for partnerships, internships, and job placement, further strengthening the region’s talent pipeline in high-demand fields.

Renovations to the property are expected to be completed by the fall of 2027, with plans to create a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will support both in-person and online learning. As the district anticipates rapid enrollment growth, it projects a rise in student enrollment from 79,000 to 127,000 by 2030. This significant increase in enrollment will reflect the growing interest in specialized technology programs and the district’s commitment to meeting the needs of both students and employers in San Antonio.

The acquisition of this office complex is an important step in ensuring that Alamo Colleges continues to provide relevant and up-to-date education for a rapidly changing economy. By expanding its focus on emerging technologies and offering programs aligned with industry needs, the district is preparing students for high-paying careers and contributing to the region’s economic development. As the School of Emerging Technologies takes shape, it will likely become a key player in shaping the future workforce of San Antonio and beyond.
